On August 5th, 1938, an American golf fanatic by the name of J S Ferebee bet $2,500 and half his plantation that he could play eight rounds of golf at an average score lower than 95 per round. And he won. At the other end of the financial scale, Al Leach won the US Amateur Public Links championship later that month, but lost his $73.50 per month job, for being absent too many days in-a-row.
