Tennyson doubtful for All-Ireland final

Kilkenny's John Tennyson is considered extremely doubtful for next month's All-Ireland hurling final and is out of next week's under-21 semi-final against Galway. Team selector Martin Fogarty said the player was undergoing tests but the outlook wasn't good.

"He put out his shoulder, which is an injury he's had before . . . we may not have a definite idea about the damage until next week but he's definitely out of the under-21s." Fogarty said the priority would be to spare the player an operation.

There is better news for the weekend's high-profile football injuries. Ronan McGarrity, the Mayo centrefielder who was stretchered off in Sunday's draw with Laois, is likely to be passed fit to play. It had been feared he had suffered a bad leg injury but tests revealed no serious damage was done.

Dublin's Ciarán Whelan has also been passed fit after being taken off injured during Saturday's quarter-final win over Westmeath. "He's been completely cleared," said team selector Dave Billings.

Carlow football manager Liam Hayes has stepped down after two years in charge. Carlow were knocked out of the Tommy Murphy Cup on Sunday by Leitrim.
