The Island women's teams are on course for another Townsend Cup - the second team double after beating Headfort 4-2 overall in the Townsend final at Headford on Saturday. Leading 2-1 after the first leg The Island came through on the back nine where Pamela Murphy and Miriam Gartland came from two down early on to beat Hillary Collins and Mary McCabe on the 17th. The Island's other point was secured by Geraldine Ryan and Gertie McMullan who were never headed in winning 4 and 3 against PK O'Reilly and Orla Foley. Headfort were always ahead in the other match where Maria O'Reilly and Pauline Walsh won 5 and 3 against Angie Dwyer and Mary Dinan.

Ironically the last time The Island won the Townsend Cup in 1991 they also went on to win the second team trophy. So in next Monday's Clairins-sponsored Eastern District ILGU Autumn finals at Newlands, The Island will have a chance of the double when they meet D·n Laoghaire in the decider. The other finals schedule for Newlands on Monday are - third team: Ardee v K Club/The Island; fourth team: Hazel Grove v Dundalk; fifth team: Kilcoole v Balbriggan.
