A two-goal deficit proved too steep a mountain to climb for UCD as St Patrick's Athletic won the first trophy of the domestic season when lifting the League Cup for the first time in their history. The silverware was all but secured after just eight minutes of this second leg as St Patrick's took an early lead through Colm Foley. Darragh Maguire added a second just before the break.

The opening goal stemmed from the first corner of the match. Loose marking was punished when Foley arrived on cue to glance Martin Russell's corner into the net.

Though making chances going forward, with 15-season veteran Derek Swan prominent, UCD's defence played with the lack of confidence befitting a team which has won just twice in 14 games and, sure enough, a simple mistake led to St Patrick's second goal on 44 minutes.

Again a harmless enough deadball in from Russell wreaked havoc. Tony McDonnell failed to hear a shout from goalkeeper Barry Ryan and headed the ball straight to Maguire, who sidefooted into the net.
