St Mel's, Longford, had to come from behind after losing the lead to claim a place in the quarter-finals of the Leinster Schools' Senior Cup (Section A) at Kilcock yesterday.

St Mel's went ahead with a penalty from Colm Glynn before Sean Carroll crossed for Skerries' only score of the opening half. The Longford side responded with tries by Glynn and Ken Masterson for a 17-5 interval lead.

The Skerries backs moved the ball well early in the second half and two tries, one of which was converted, had them level. Another fine kick by Justin Ryan gave them the lead but St Mel's rallied and two Glynn penalties saw them through.

Scorers: St Mel's: C Glynn try, 3 pens and 2 cons, K Masterson try; Skerries: S Carroll 2 tries, C Whearty try, J Ryan pen and con.
