CRICKET: Irish cricketer Eoin Morgan has been selected by the ECB to represent the south of England in a major regional tournament that will be used to pick the English national under-17 and under-19 squads.

Morgan (17), who has been a regular in the Ireland set-up since he won his first cap last year, has been spending the summer playing for the Middlesex 2nd XI and is also captain of the Middlesex under-17 team.

The tournament will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week at Loughborough, which is the location of the ECB's national cricket academy.

It's thought that despite holding a British passport, Morgan is still obliged to spend four years playing in England before he can represent them in any tournament under the auspices of the ICC, such as the under-19 World Cup.

However, he would be eligible for selection to the England under-17 side as the ICC does not control any competitions at that level.

The selection comes as a boost to the left-handed batsman after he was left out of the starting team for both of Ireland's one-day international matches against Bangladesh earlier this week.
