Blackburn have withdrawn Steven Reid from the Republic of Ireland squad after the midfielder was surprisingly recalled by caretaker manager Don Givens for the final Euro 2008 qualifier against Wales.

Reid is near full fitness after 14 months of problems with knee and back injuries but Rovers boss Mark Hughes does not feel he is ready for top-level action.

The 26-year-old will now stay with Rovers next week rather than report for Ireland ahead of the trip to Cardiff Hughes said: "It was a boost for Steven and we are grateful to them for that because he has been out so long.

"They wanted him back into the fold at the earliest opportunity but unfortunately it has come too soon for him, he is not ready.
