Newcastle booked their place in the second qualifying round of the Uefa Cup as a Shola Ameobi double and a late strike from James Milner saw them beat Intertoto Cup opponents Lillestrom 4-1 on aggregate.

Ameobi showed his determination to lead the line for the striker-light Magpies this season with his first-half double as Newcastle looked sharper than they had in the first leg of the tie at St James' Park, which had ended 1-1.

The breakthrough came following a set-piece after 28 minutes as Ameobi followed up to score after Otto Fredrikson had saved from Charles N'Zogbia.

And the Magpies doubled their lead in the 36th minute when Scott Parker rounded off a good run with a cross which was poked home by Ameobi to put the visitors in firm control.

Lillestrom, captained by former Liverpool player Frode Kippe, had more of the possession in the second half but barely threatened Shay Given's goal.

And Milner added a third in the final minute as he unleashed a curling shot into the top corner on an encouraging afternoon for Magpies boss Glenn Roeder who is close to signing Ireland's Damien Duff.

Hibernian cruelly saw their hopes of reaching the Uefa Cup dashed by the away goals rule despite beating Odense 2-1 at Easter Road.

Tony Mowbray's charges were already down 1-0 from the first leg of their Intertoto Cup tie and they conceded a costly second-half goal to the Danes who beat Shelbourne in the previous round.

The Leith club rallied late on to win the game through Rob Jones and Paul Dalglish strikes but it was not enough as they exited on away goals.
