Alan Mathews resigns as Athlone Town manager

Several first-team players expected to follow as situation becomes ‘untenable’

Former Shelbourne, Drogheda United and Bray Wanderers boss Alan Mathews has resigned as manager of first division side Athlone Town who recently failed to fulfil a fixture at Waterford United after the most of the club's senior players refused to travel as a result over unpaid expenses.

The FAI fined the club but also appointed an outside, independent committee to assess the situation at the club and make recommendations regarding its future.

Mathews, who has been in charge since the early part of last season, had been hoping that the FAI intervention would lead to some progress with regard to the crisis but this has not happened and he has now departed saying that his position had become “untenable,” with several of the first-team squad expected to follow.
