Marlon Harewood wasted the game's best chance by hitting the post in the first half while USA striker Brian McBride missed a fine opportunity for Fulham.

McBride and Helguson failed to connect cleanly and Fulham's cause was helped by a red card for Konchesky in the 85th minute.

Routledge charged towards goal and Konchesky lunged for the ball, initially winning it but also tripping the Fulham winger in the process.

As the last line of defence, referee Chris Foy immediately reached for the red card and after protesting his innocence with back up from most of the West Ham team, Konchesky stalked off.

Fulham could not take advantage of their numerical advantage in the short time remaining and the match finished goalless.
