Player's reaction: Republic of Ireland match-winner Stephen Ireland admitted he did not even see the ball hit the net after scoring the first goal at Croke Park.

Ireland struck the only goal as the Republic beat Wales 1-0  taking his tally in an Irish shirt to three in four games.

The Manchester City midfielder, who also scored a late winner in San Marino last month, said: "I'm very happy to be honest and relieved. They are important goals and I am happy to get on the scoresheet.

"I didn't see it go in. As it went in I turned away and just saw all the fans screaming. It was one of my career highlights so far."

Ireland did not complete the match due to injury and is a doubt for the match against Slovakia on Wednesday.

He added: "I was gutted. It's a hard decision to put your hand up and say you're injured and come off but as I've grown up I've become more mature about it."

Ireland's fitness will be assessed in the morning but striker Robbie Keane will definitely be missing from the match against Slovakia after incurring suspension with another booking.

Keane said: "I'm devastated. I lost my balance and fell on top of him. I'm devastated but I wish the lads all the best. There's still a long way to go and we've got three points today. Hopefully we can look forward to getting another three on Wednesday."
