Bohs secure 10th league title

Drogheda United 1 Bohemians 2:Bohemians are back on top of the pile after securing their 10th title, the first since 2003, with a 2-1 win over defending eircom Premier League champions Drogheda United.

The Dubliner's needed to match the result of St Patrick's Athletic this evening to guarantee the title but, typical of team that had won 11 league games on the bounce, they wanted to do it in style and sealed the win with Jason Byrne's second of the night in injury time.

Pat's, as it transpired, were beaten 3-0 at home by Cobh Ramblers.

After having a goal disallowed in the first half and hitting the post in the second before a goal line clearance by the Drogheda defence, it looked like a point would have to do.

But Alan Hughes' dismissal for a second yellow card allowed them to push on and they got their reward when Byrne was slipped through at the death and rounded Jamie Ewing before finishing from a tight angle.

Drogs had their chances and could have taken the lead early on when Eamon Zayed fired over the bar from 10 yards after a brilliant dash down the line and low cross from Ollie Cahill.

The opener came in the 23rd minute and was laced with the class that has seen Pat Fenlon's side romp to the title.

The ball found its way to Anto Murphy 30 yards out after a wayward pass from Graham Gartland and the winger's pass to Jason Byrne was weighted perfectly.

Facign away from gaol there appeared no immediate danger for Drogs but the striker's deft chip over Ewing was worthy of any stage.

Drogs struck back in the 37th minute when Joe Kendrick's shot was blocked but the ball dropped to Faz Kudozvic who volleyed home.

Bohs thought they were ahead on the stroke of halftime when Owen Heary emphatically finished, but defender Jason McGuiness was ruled to have fouled when nodding the ball down to his captain.

Elsewhere, Finn Harp drew 1-1 with Cork City and Bray Wanderers beate Derry City 2-1 at the CAarlisle Grounds.
