Champions League review:Holders Barcelona were held to a 0-0 draw at AC Milan in their Champions League quarter-final first leg despite dominating possession for long spells tonight, but Bayern Munich were the big winners of the night in Marseille when they left with two away goals and a clean sheet.
Mario Gomez gave Bayern the lead just before halftime when Arjen Robben's defence-splitting pass sent him clear and his shot beat Elinton Andrade too easily at the near post.
The Bundesliga side, whose stadium will stage the final, dominated the second half and Robben doubled their lead after 69 minutes when he played a neat one-two in the box with Thomas Mueller before cooly slotting the ball past Andrade.
Marseille had a few early chances, notably when Rod Fanni's header was parried by Manuel Neuer into the path of Loic Remy only for the France striker to lash his close-range shot wide.
The second leg takes place next Tuesday, when Milan will make the trip to the Camp Nou still in with a chance of an upset after Lionel Messi, who has scored a Spanish record of 55 goals in all competitions this season, and Barcelona failed to score for the first time in nine Champions League outings this season.
Milan's Robinho had the first clear chance but volleyed his close range effort high over the bar instead of troubling Victor Valdes in the opening minutes.
Messi had the ball in the net in the 17th but it was flagged offside and apart from that Milan did a good job of cancelling the Argentine out, restricting him to only a handful of runs which have wreaked havoc with other sides.
Former Barca striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic also had a good chance for the Serie A leaders when he collected a pass on the edge of the area but his shot was well-saved by Valdes.
Barcelona began dominating possession as only they can and had a penalty appeal turned down when Alexis Sanchez appeared to be tripped by goalkeeper Christian Abbiati before the break.
Their were plenty of neat passing moves involved Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sanchez, one of which ended with Abbiati turning away Xavi's shot in the 25th minute. Xavi was also close with a dipping effort while Iniesta failed to hit the target when the ball found him at the far post.
Milan's stout defence was symbolised by left back Luca Antonini producing a superb last-ditch tackle to stop Sanchez firing in on goal.
Iniesta began the second half with a run and shot which went just wide before the game became bogged down with the defenders prevailing, even against Messi.
