Athlone Town are the latest League of Ireland club to look to their supporters to bail them out of financial trouble.

Athlone Town are the latest League of Ireland club to look to their supporters to bail them out of financial trouble.

The midlands club, who have admitted to struggling with debts of €320,000, held a meeting last night which was attended by 200 supporters.

At the meeting, Athlone Town officials unveiled details of their Patrons' club, where they hope to get 400 supporters to give €10 per week for two years in return for benefits that include a season ticket and access to international tickets.

A full take-up of the scheme would see the club realise income of over €400,000 over two years.

Last week Drogheda United raised €100,000 in just one week from their supporters in a bid to stop the club going out of business.

On Friday the club were granted a 30-day extension to their examinership by the High Court.
