DEADLINE DAY: Robbie Keane returned to Tottenham from Liverpool but the saga of Andrei Arshavin's move to Arsenal was still undecided hours after the deadline of a gripping transfer-deadline day.

Keane left Spurs for Anfield six months ago but struggled under Rafael Benitez, with the deal to return to White Hart Lane understood to start at £12million before rising with add-ons.

The 28-year-old striker passed a medical and agreeing a four-year contract, following Jermain Defoe and Pascal Chimbonda as players manager Harry Redknapp has brought back in January.

“They were all good players that the chairman didn’t want to lose in the first place,” said Redknapp. “I think they are terrific signings for the club.

“Robbie will make a terrific impact, he is a boy who wants to win and you need that at the club. Every time he puts his shirt on he gives everything he’s got.”

Arshavin’s move was the other headline deal on the final day of transfer activity for the season but three hours after the 5pm deadline there was no announcement from Arsenal or Zenit St Petersburg.

The 27-year-old had travelled to London to put him in position for a medical and discussions over personal terms.

It is thought that a one-off payment to Zenit from the player was the stumbling block, but the fact that the Premier League extended the deadline due to the bad weather meant a deal still remained a possibility.

Arshavin’s move looked a strong possibility when he was pictured in Hertfordshire, before hopes of a deal receded when he travelled back the airport.

Despite the weather there was plenty of business among other clubs.

Elsewhere in the Barclays Premier League, Brazilian striker Jo moved from Manchester City to Everton on loan until the end of the season.

Chelsea signed Ricardo Quaresma from Inter Milan on loan until the end of the season after the Portugal winger was left out of Jose Mourinho’s Champions League squad.

Charles N’Zogbia moved to Wigan from Newcastle, with Ryan Taylor moving in the opposite direction. Wigan boss Steve Bruce also allowed Henri Camara to be loaned out to Stoke.

Angelos Basinas joined Portsmouth from AEK Athens but his new club pulled out of a deal to sign Giovani dos Santos from Spurs.

Fulham had a busy final day of the window, with Olivier Dacourt arriving on loan from Inter Milan and Julian Gray remaining until the end of the season. Adrian Leijer moved to Norwich on loan.

West Brom made two signings in Juan Carlos Menseguez and Youssouf Mulumbu.

Calum Davenport moved from West Ham to Sunderland on loan until the end of the season, while Peterborough signed Manchester United centre-back James Chester on a one-month loan deal.

In the Coca-Cola Championship, Wolves completed the signing of Hearts captain Christophe Berra and Norwich signed Rangers forward Alan Gow on loan until the end of the season.

Sunderland’s Michael Chopra also returned to Cardiff on loan until the end of the season.
