Ajax keen to lure Davids back home

Ajax head coach Henk ten Cate wants to take Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids back to Amsterdam.

Ajax head coach Henk ten Cate wants to take Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids back to Amsterdam.

Davids helped Tottenham secure a place in the Uefa Cup after joining from Inter Milan last year but has been linked with moves elsewhere.

The 33-year-old Dutchman began his career at Ajax after coming through the club's famed youth system.

Ten Cate said: "I have spoken with Edgar about rejoining us and he thinks it is a terrific idea.

"We have a lot of young players and he can show them what is needed to reach the top and stay there. He could play a crucial role for us. He has lots of experience, which he could pass on.

"Edgar would be an ideal addition to our squad, although no deal has yet been done for him."

One potential replacement for Davids at White Hart Lane could be St Etienne and Ivory Coast midfielder Didier Zakora.

St Etienne claim they have received interest from Spurs in the player, who looks set to leave this summer.

Zakora's agent Franck Belhassen said: "There is interest from a number of clubs in Didier and Tottenham is one of them.

"At the moment he is away with the Ivory Coast preparing for the World Cup and we will wait until after that before deciding his future.

"We have a deal with Tottenham that he can go this summer for the right price."  PA
