Sheedy gets the all-clear after cancer scare

Former Everton and Republic of Ireland midfielder Kevin Sheedy has been given the all-clear by doctors after undergoing surgery following his recent diagnosis with bowel cancer.

The 52-year-old revealed his illness last month, but an early diagnosis meant it was operable and Sheedy is recovering at home. He told Everton's website, www.evertonfc.com: "My life has been saved through early detection and I am told that over 90 per cent who are diagnosed at the earliest stage are successfully treated."

Everton confirmed Sheedy will not require further treatment.

Terry to return for fourth day

John Terry will return for a fourth and perhaps final day of his disciplinary hearing today into a charge the Chelsea skipper used racist language on the pitch. Luis Suarez's racism hearing last year took four days to complete and Terry's appearance before an FA independent regulatory panel will last at least that long. Terry yesterday spent eight hours at the hearing at Wembley Stadium, where he denies a charge he used a racist slur towards QPR's Anton Ferdinand in October last year.

Terry was found not guilty in a magistrates' court in July of a racially-motivated public order offence with the prosecution unable to prove he had called Ferdinand a "f****** black c***" as an insult. Terry's legal team had argued the governing body's own rules dictated his acquittal in court means the case cannot proceed.

Rangers earn surprise win over Motherwell

Rangers showed they can still compete with the top sides in the country by dumping in-form Motherwell out of the League Cup last night on a score of 2-0.

Rangers faced top-flight opposition for the first time since being consigned to liquidation and voted into the Third Division in the summer when the Premier League leaders came calling in the third round tie. Motherwell were branded favourites by their hosts ahead of this match but any hopes of claiming a first victory at Ibrox since 1997 were dashed by goals from Lee McCulloch and Dean Shiels as Rangers booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Napoli powered by Cavani hat-trick

Edinson Cavani scored a hat-trick to lead Napoli to a 3-0 win over Lazio last night after the visitors had an early goal disallowed when Miroslav Klose owned up to handling the ball.

The Germany forward put the ball in the net in the third minute for Lazio and the goal was initially awarded but the referee changed his mind when Klose admitted using his hand. Cavani also missed a penalty as Napoli joined Juventus on 13 points at the top of Serie A.

Stephan El Shaaraway scored AC Milans first home goals of the season in all competitions to give them a 2-0 win over Cagliari and ease the pressure on beleaguered coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Inter Milan won by the same score at at Chievo while Francesco Totti, one day short of his 36th birthday, scored for Roma, who let slip a lead at home again and drew 1-1 with promoted Sampdoria.
