Jeremy Noseda capped his first full term in charge of the Shalfleet stables with Wannabe Grand's victory in the Group One Shadwell Stud Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.

The bay daughter of Danehill, whose previous two wins came in a Listed race and the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes, both over the July Course's six furlongs, waited in midfield against the rail as Miss Universe made the running for the early stages of the £125,000-guaranteed fillies' test.

With most hands having been played as the field came into the final furlong, Pat Eddery dashed his partner, the 3-1 market leader, between horses to beat slow-starting Imperial Beauty by half a length.

Wannabe Grand had wanted for stamina over the seven furlongs of the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last time, prompting her connections to bring her back to six.

The concluding Tattersalls Houghton Sales Conditions Stakes was won by Mick Channon's Maidaan and Kieren Fallon.

Maidaan runs in the colours of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, for whom Channon trains 1,000 Guineas favourite Bint Allayl, who hammered Wannabe Grand in York's Lowther Stakes, and Josr Algarhoud, winner of the Gimcrack at the same meeting.

David Loder, whose Houston Time ran second to Maidaan, had earlier taken the Soltykoff Maiden Stakes with Sheikh Ahmed's newcomer Timahs, a full-brother to 1996 Derby winner Shaamit.

The bay, who showed an impressive change of speed to beat Biennale to initiate a Fallon double, is a 33-1 chance with Ladbrokes to emulate his brother at Epsom.

James Fanshawe's Travelmate won the opening H & K Commissions Rated Stakes. Unleashed by Ray Cochrane with a run inside the last, the four-year-old, starting at 6-1, got up to beat Rainbow High by half a length.

Barry and Michael Hills, responsible for Rainbow High, also had to settle for second in the £18,520 European Breeders Fund Jersey Lily Fillies' Nursery won by Melody Queen, who two starts ago was beaten in a Ripon selling plate.

Flag Fen unseated his rider Chris Cogan and bolted to the start of the NGK Spark Plugs Apprentice Handicap before making all the running on the return leg to win by four lengths, after which Cogan received a two-day ban for incorrect use of the whip.
