Shocked Ramblers fall by the Wayside

FAI Cup, Second round: Intermediate Cup holders Wayside Celtic added Cobh Ramblers to their list of giant killings with a shock 1-0 win over the First Division promotion contenders at St Colman's Park on Saturday night.

The Kilternan club had twice knocked out Waterford United and Finn Harps in the 1990s.

Captain Ian Callaghan and goalkeeper Robbie O'Dowd were the heroes for the Leinster Senior League side as they inflicted a third successive home defeat on Cobh.

Callaghan scored the only goal of the game on 16 minutes when heading home man-of-the-match Gary Smith's cross.

O'Dowd prevented a replay with a brilliant save in stoppage time from an Alan Carey free-kick.

Fellow LSL side Malahide United frustrated Sligo Rovers, the joint-leaders of the First Division, with a late equaliser to force a replay in a 1-1 draw at the Showgrounds.

Paul McTiernan gave Sligo a 23rd minute lead. But injury-hit Malahide levelled 12 minutes from time when Kevin Craven met Alan Corcoran's corner to score with a near post header. The sides meet again in north Dublin tomorrow evening.

Andy Myler scored a hat-trick as holders Longford Town eased past the minimal challenge of Waterford Crystal with a 5-0 win at Flancare Park.

Having pummelled the FAI Junior Cup finalists for 22 minutes, a fluke goal gave Longford the lead when Paul Keegan's sliced cross entered the net in off the far post.

There was no such ambiguity about Longford's second goal which arrived within a further minute. Keegan was fouled on the edge of the area and Myler scored for the fourth game running with a delightful chip over the visitors' wall past goalkeeper Derek Hearne.

Myler got his second of the night to kill off the game from a 65th minute penalty after Jimmy Barden had pulled him down. The hat-trick arrived on 82 minutes before Myler set up Dessie Baker to tap in the fifth four minutes later.

There were no surprises elsewhere with a Kevin McHugh goal four minutes from time giving Finn Harps a fully deserved 1-0 win at Kilkenny City.

Darren McKenna scored twice in Kildare County's 4-1 win over Junior side Galway Hibernian while there were wins for Douglas Hall and Cherry Orchard in the two all non-league ties.

Cork side Douglas Hall beat Limerick's Carew Park 3-1 in a match that saw a player from each side dismissed.

Goals from Keith Staunton and Declan O'Connell early in each half appeared to have Douglas Hall in control.

The chief drama of the match unfolded on 69 minutes, however, when Douglas Hall goalkeeper Adrian O'Donovan was sent off for striking Denis Whelan after pulling him down to concede a penalty. Paul Quinn's spot kick was parried by reserve keeper Gary Aherne, but Quinn followed up to score.

Carew's revival hopes were quickly dashed when Joe McSorley added Douglas Hall's third goal within two minutes. Carew then had Albert Slattery sent off in the final minute.

Barry Doyle put the gloss on Cherry Orchard's 4-0 win over Inchicore Junior side Lissadell United at Richmond Park with two late goals inside a minute.
