Tennis: To lose to a qualifier once on grass, when you are regarded as one of the main contenders for the Wimbledon men's singles title, is bad enough. To do so twice in three years - when highly seeded, moreover - smacks of carelessness.

Yesterday the British number one Tim Henman's interest in the Stella Artois Championship came to an abrupt and embarrassing end before a full and expectant house, when he lost 7-6, 6-4 to a 22-year-old Californian, Bob Bryan, who is outside the world's top 200 players.

Athletics: Ciara Sheehy and Karen Shinkins - two of Ireland's Olympic sprint prospects - have been given added sponsorship support for the summer from Reebok. With the Sydney Games still some three months away, both athletes welcomed the support for what will be a long summer of racing.

Shinkins (23) hopes to improve her national 400-metre record in the coming weeks and will begin her serious competition schedule in Estonia on June 12th. For Sheehy (19), the focus will be on achieving the 200-metre qualifying mark of 23.20 seconds - just inside her best of 23.49.

Cycling: With the national road race championships just over a week away, former junior world champion Mark Scanlon has highlighted his current good form with a strong showing in the French Tour de Loire Atlantique event.

The 19-year-old Sligoman, who has been based in France this season with the CC Etupes team, had a string of good placings in the four-stage event. Scanlon sprinted home fourth in the opening 155 kilometre stage, finishing 10th in the 100-kilometre third stage and then crossed the line seventh in the concluding leg of the race. Scanlon ended the race sixth overall, 40 seconds behind outright winner Ivailo Gabrowski of Bulgaria. With team-mate Raphael Jeune in 5th,

Boxing: Ulster's Damaen Kelly is being lined up for a shot at IBO fly-weight champion Zolile Mbatyi.

European champion Kelly produced an impressive display of boxing on the move as he unanimously out-pointed rugged Spaniard Jose Antonio Lopez Bueno at the Ulster Hall, Belfast, on Monday night.

Now manager Frank Maloney wants to move Kelly, ranked 10 by the WBC and nine by the WBO, onto the world scene.

Surfing: The Irish team had success on the double yesterday in the women's event at the 15th World Surfing Games being held in temperatures of 35 degrees in Porta de Galinhas, northern Brazil. Both Zoe Lally and Easkey Britton finished second in their first round heats to advance to round two.

Golf: Three Irishmen are through to the knockout stages of the British Open One-Armed Golfers Championship at Conwy in North Wales. Michael O'Grady from Mullingar led the Irish charge while Trim's Brendan Swan and Paddy Fitzgerald from Limerick also made it into the last 16 of the competition. Leading qualifier was Nick Champness from Royal Ashdown Forest with a 36-hole score of 169. O'Grady, a nine-handicapper, had 182, Swan 183 and Fitzgerald 198.
