Australian PGA Championship: A resurgent Peter Senior shot a seven-under-par 65 to extend his lead to five strokes after the second round of the Australian PGA championship yesterday.
Senior (44), had shared a one-stroke first round lead with Steve Collins on eight-under-par 64 and added another eight birdies and one bogey yesterday.
Senior carded a 36-hole total of 15-under-par 129 to hold a five-shot advantage over fellow Australian Rod Pampling who had a 69 to be outright second on 10-under-par 134 at Coolum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Craig Parry with a 68, Nick O'Hern, who also had a 68, and Peter O'Malley, who shot a 67, were a further shot behind on nine-under-par 135, with New Zealander Gareth Paddison sixth on eight-under-par 136 after carding a 65.
Collins had a 73 yesterday to slip to equal seventh on seven-under-par 137 with Australian Masters runner-up Adam Scott, who had a 69, and Australian Open champion Stephen Allan, who fired a 67.
Senior, a former Australian Open, Australian Masters, Johnnie Walker Classic and Heineken Classic winner, is semi-retired from tournament play and last week's Australian Masters was his first event since May.
Playing in his home state of Queensland this week, Senior says his short game is much stronger since coach Gary Edwin has redesigned his swing.
"I'm hitting the short stuff so good now. If I could have done it ages ago I could have won another dozen tournaments," Senior said.
"I was really happy with the way I started (on Friday) and I thought I could birdie every hole."
