Scotland support the Auld Enemy

A majority of Scots will support England at this summer's World Cup, a survey claimed yesterday. The findings dispel the stereotype of Scots cheering on England's sporting opponents, with 67 per cent saying they wanted Sven-Goran Eriksson's side to triumph in Germany.

However, a hardcore few still could not bring themselves to cast aside the old rivalry and support the Auld Enemy - one in four Scots hope England will lose.

According to the BBC survey, the number of people north of the border who would back England in a World Cup final varied marginally according to the opponent. If Sven's men played Germany, 69 per cent of Scots would cheer for England but support fell to 65 per cent with the home side facing Brazil in the final stage.

Scots were also pleased about London winning the 2012 Olympics - ironically, even more so than Londoners.
