Brendan’s call a halt to holders’ reign

Pobalscoil Chorcha Dhuibhne's four-year reign as Corn Uí Mhuirí champions in Munster came to an end in Killarney yesterday as they lost to St Brendan's College by 13 points in a very one sided quarter-final. This result also ends their hopes of a third consecutive Hogan Cup title.

St Brendan's took an early 1-3 to 0-0 lead after the first quarter, David Clifford with The Sem's goal in the 14th minute. Pobalscoil rallied slightly to trail by 1-5 to 0-3 at half-time but Tomás Mac an tSithigh got their only score of the second half as The Sem prevailed by 1-14 to 0-4.

St Flannan's of Ennis broke PS Sliabh Luachra Rathmore hearts with a late Maurice Nugent goal from the penalty spot that scuttled the Kerry side's second-half comeback in a fiercely fought quarter-final, played at Rathkeale, winning 1-9 to 1-8.

helped last year’s beaten finalists St Francis College, Rochestown into the semi-finals as they overcame Clonakilty CC 1-6 to 0-7 at Newcestown. Inspired by the excellent kicking of James Holland, Rochestown led by 0-6 to 0-4 in the 52nd minute.

Rochestown’s semi-final opponents will be CBS High School of Clonmel, who defeated Ballincollig’s Coláiste Choilm 1-11 to 1-8 at the Waterford IT complex.

Matthew Whelan’s goal put Coláiste Choilm 1-3 to 0-3 ahead in the first half but points from Shane O’Meara, Michael O’Reilly and Michael Barlow had Clonmel 0-7 to 1-3 in front by half-time and O’Reilly’s goal after 37 minutes proved pivotal.
