James Cronin and Mike Sherry sign new Munster deals

Munster have completed the signing of frontrow duo James Cronin and Mike Sherry on new contracts.

It was not all good news for the province, with confirmation that South Africa tighthead BJ Botha has ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery in the next few weeks, ending his season and possibly his career at Munster.

The former Springbok frontrow sustained the injury during last Saturday's Champions Cup encounter against Stade Francais.

English Premiership side Exeter are believed to be interested in signing Botha.

Loosehead prop Cronin, 25, has agreed a three-year extension that will keep him at the province until at least June 2019, while hooker Sherry, 27, will be staying until the summer of 2018 at least.

Sherry was sidelined for 21 months due to an initial knee injury and recurring shoulder issues that ruled him out until the start of the 2015/16 season. He has made 11 appearances and scored three tries already this season.

In addition to the international duo signing contract extensions Munster also confirmed that Academy player David Johnston will be promoted to the senior squad at the start of the 2016/17 season.

The 21-year-old will advance to the senior squad next season after signing a development contract for season 2016/17 and a full contract for 2017/18.

The Clonmel-native plays centre and fullback and this year has alternated his appearances between Munster and Munster A.

Commenting on the latest contract signings head coach Anthony Foley said: "We are delighted with the latest news, and as a group are hugely lifted with three of our home-grown players committing their futures to the province.

“James and Mike have shown what they are capable of time and time again and they both have a massive part to play in this squad’s progression.

“Both are products of our underage set up at club and school level respectively and they represent the hard work that is being done at grassroots and academy level each week.

“Similarly, David, who is now breaking through has followed the same pathway and we look forward to seeing his growth over the coming years.”
