Llanelli have "served notice" on the contract of rugby director Phil Davies as speculation mounts that former Wales coach Gareth Jenkins could make a dramatic Stradey Park return.

Davies, whose two-season reign was highlighted by Llanelli reaching the Heineken Cup semi-finals last year, when they bowed out against Leicester, will serve out his notice period away from the club.

"The decision follows a review of the Scarlets' rugby performance this season which includes looking at the structure of the rugby playing side of the business ahead of the region's move to a new stadium at the end of this year," a statement from the club said today.

The Scarlets failed to register a point in their Heineken qualifying pool this term, losing all six games, while they also made little impact on the Magners League and EDF Energy Cup.

Former Llanelli and Wales forward Davies, 44, was appointed Scarlets boss after leaving a similar role with Leeds.

Jenkins, meanwhile, is understood to be in the frame for an elite performance director role at Llanelli. He was axed as Wales boss following a dismal World Cup campaign last autumn, paying the price for pool stage elimination at the hands of Fiji in Nantes.

During Jenkins' long reign as Llanelli coach, the Scarlets reached two Heineken semi-finals, in addition to enjoying regular domestic league and cup success.

Other names in the Stradey Park coaching frame include former Llanelli, Wales and Lions number eight Scott Quinnell, together with former Samoa World Cup captain Pat Lam.

Llanelli, meanwhile will be without Ireland international Simon Easterby when they take on Munster this weekend. Easterby will be joined on the sidelines by Dwayne Peel and Alix Popham.

Newport Gwent Dragons have announced a 24-man squad ahead for their clash with league leaders Leinster at the RDS on Saturday (6.00pm)

Coach Paul Turner is wary of the threat posed by the side looking to wrap up the title, but wants a "huge performance" from his players as they set about trying to beat the Ospreys to the third Welsh spot in next season's European Cup.

It's a big ask given Ospreys have a 10 point advantage over the Dragons with the same amount of games to play.

"The players are aware that I'm asking for a huge performance on the weekend, as I will be in all three fixtures over the seven days."
