RUGBY rookies Scoil Eoin CBS from Athy - making their debut con a rugby field - scored a clear-cut win over Gorey CS in this Section A cup tie at Tullow, Co Carlow.
Athy were inspired by scrum-half Cameron Blanchfield, who dictated the play throughout and fittingly scored a second-half try.
Scoil Eoin had the advantage of the bitterly cold wind in the opening half, and had an ideal start when centre David Duane broke through from his own half to score a fifth-minute try which was converted by full back Aaron Flood.
For the rest of the half Gorey gave as good as they got but lacked the guile to break down the solid Scoil Eoin defence. But even with wind assistance in the second half, they were put on the back foot.
A splendid Aaron Flood penalty and a late try from Dominic Grufferty completed the scoring.
