Two months after wondering whether he was a has-been, Loren Roberts proved otherwise when he won the $3 million GTE Byron Nelson Classic in a play-off yesterday. Roberts parred the first extra hole to beat fellow-American Steve Pate after they finished tied at 18-under-par 262 at the Las Colinas TPC in Texas, a tournament record low score.
Spanish teenager Sergio Garcia made a great recovery birdie on the final hole to finish in a four-way tie for third with Americans Chris DiMarco, Brian Watts and Lee Janzen, a distant seven strokes behind.
He earned $44,000 in only his second start as a pro: "Overall, 69 is a very good score for how I played," he said. "After I hit a bad drive out-of-bounds on the sixth (hole) something went wrong in my head and I couldn't hit a good drive."
Garcia needs only $30,474 more to earn special temporary membership on the PGA Tour, which would make him eligible for unlimited invitations.
