Real Madrid and Lazio bounced back from various setbacks to earn opening wins in the Champions League second phase last night.

Last season's runners-up Bayern Munich, however, could only draw at Norway's Rosenborg.

Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes, preferred to goal-less Nicolas Anelka at centre forward, struck in the 17th minute and Raul hit the second three minutes after the break. Serhii Rebrov scored an 86th minute penalty for Dynamo Kiev.

It was an impressive result for the Spaniards playing their first match in Europe since Welsh coach John Toshack was sacked.

Last season's runners-up Bayern Munich drew 1-1 at Rosenborg in the other group C match with Carsten Jancker putting Bayern ahead but Rosenborg's Bent Skammelsrud equalised.

Yugoslavia's Dejan Stankovic and Brazil's Sergio Conceicao earned a 2-0 win for Lazio, thrashed 4-1 by rivals AS Roma at the weekend, at Marseille.

The French, European champions in 1993, were looking to recapture the form which saw off Manchester United in the opening group phase but they have been in poor domestic form and were desperate for a confidence boost in Europe.

It wasn't forthcoming as second half efforts deservedly handed Lazio three points.

Stankovic out-jumped Sebastien Perez at the far post to steer a header past Marseille keeper Stephane Porato and in the 77th minute the Italians effectively killed the game when Conceicao slammed the ball past Porato from six metres.

Real Madrid left their domestic woes behind them to win at Kiev's Olimpijskyi Stadium.

Real sacked Toshack two weeks ago after several stumbles in the league left them just eighth in the table and replaced him with Vicente del Bosque and the change appeared to have a liberating effect.

Dynamo tried to stun Real with an energetic opening burst, but the visitors soon took the initiative, creating several scoring opportunities.

In the 17th minute Real's Brazilian international wing back Roberto Carlos eluded a clutch of defenders and crossed from the left for Raul, who fed strike partner Morientes and he fired the ball home from close range.

Dynamo rushed forward looking for an equaliser but they lacked direction and Raul stunned them when he lobbed home Real's second over helpless keeper Alexander Shovkovsky just three minutes into the second half.

Bayern largely dominated at Rosenborg although they couldn't convert that superiority into more than one goal. Jancker scored in the 10th minute after being set up by Mehmet Scholl and Markus Babbel.

Rosenborg showed little of the offensive sparkle which is the hallmark of their game.

Skammelsrud did make good use of a half chance and equalised in the 47th minute.
