The first day's play in the Women's Inter-provincial Championship at Killarney was called off yesterday because of heavy flooding on several of the greens on the Mahony's Point course. British Girls' Championship: Martina Gillen kept the Irish flag flying at High Post, Wiltshire, yesterday by giving a stylish performance to move into the match-play stages. The 17-year-old Munster Girls' champion from Beaverstown posted a four-over-par 77 to add to her 74 of the previous day for a 151 total which got her through with a stroke to spare.

The display by Gillen was the only bright spot on a rather depressing day for the Irish, whose champion, Pamela Murphy of The Island, crashed out with a 161 aggregate.

Boys' Home Internationals: Ireland, champions of Europe only last year, found Scotland tough nuts to crack at Conwy, north Wales, yesterday. They virtually surrendered any chance they had of a surprise victory by losing four of the five foursomes.

They proceeded to go down in the singles by six matches to three with one halved for an overall 10 1/2-4 1/2 defeat.

In the other match, England, the defending champions, overcame Wales 9 1/2-5 1/2. Today Wales v Ireland and England v Scotland.
