SOME careful scanning of the sales catalogues helped trainer Alan Jarvis spot Proud Native, the horse that was to provide him with the biggest windfall of his career at Redcar yesterday.

Sent off a 13 to 2 chance Proud Native produced a spirited effort to repel Nigrasine by a head in the £100,000 Redcar Two Year old Trophy.

Jarvis, who has been a trainer since 1969 apart from a five year break, bought Proud Native for London based Australian businessman Leon Furst for just 6,000 guineas after being attracted by the horse's pedigree. He is the son of leading American horse Imp Society.

"I spotted him on the last day of the Gofts sales when most people had gone home. He was one of only six good horses left in the catalogue," he said.

Proud Native, ridden by Willie Ryan, had shot to the front two furlongs out after escaping the scrimmaging in a rough race. He looked poised to win comfortably but in the end there was a close call as Nigrasine finished strongly.

The stewards inquired into some interference in the early stages of the race and suspended Lindsay Charnock for three days (October 26th, 28th and 29th) for careless riding. They found that his mount Osomental had interfered with Pelham which in turn hampered Classic Park, trained by Aidan O'Brien.

Meanwhile, Charnwood Forest is likely to join Mark of Esteem in Godolphin's pincer movement on the Breeders' Cup Mile after brushing aside his opposition in the Group Two Challenge Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.

The four year old is due to fly out to Canada on Monday and connections will gauge how he has come out of yesterday's race before making a final decision as to his participation in the 1 million Mile, which takes place a week on Saturday.
