Real Madrid remain at the top of the table after an unconvincing 4-3 home victory over Real Mallorca at the Bernabeu yesterday.

Brazilian forward Robinho was in sparkling form and twice put Real ahead in the first half, only for Fernando Varela's equalisers to keep Mallorca in the game.

Daniel Guiza put the visitors in front for the first time after the break but further goals from Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy maintained Real's 100 per cent home record.

Real are one point ahead of second-placed Villarreal, who are on 27 points after round 12 after beating Sevilla 3-2 at home last night.

Guillermo Franco scored twice and an 86th-minute Matias Fernandez penalty sealed the points for Villarreal.

Barcelona slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Getafe on Saturday. Barcelona and Valencia, who hammered promoted Real Murcia 3-0 at home on Saturday, are, third and fourth respectively on 24 points.

Earlier, Espanyol beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at home thanks to a last-minute own goal from Aitor Ocio. Last season's Uefa Cup finalists moved up to fifth place on 22 points, one ahead of Atletico Madrid who were held to a goalless draw at promoted Almeria.

Serie A

Fiorentina missed an opportunity to move into the top spot as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Udinese on a day marred by violence among fans across Italy.

A Lazio fan was accidentally shot and killed by a policeman seeking to break up a clash with Juventus supporters, while the Atalanta-AC Milan match was called off after seven minutes when supporters attempted to smash through a barrier. The game between Cagliari and Roma was also called off.

Fiorentina remain on 23 points, two points behind first-placed Inter, with Juventus joining Roma and Udinese on 22 points after a 2-2 draw at Parma.

It was Fiorentina's first defeat in 21 games in all competitions since April. Fabio Quagliarella and Antonio Di Natale scored for Udinese, who are now fifth on 22 points, with Fiorentina striker Giampaolo Pazzin netting in between.

Juventus rallied from two down as Nicola Legrottaglie and Vincenzo Iaquinta scored the goals to haul them back.

In other games, Reggina beat Genoa 2- 0, Livorno won 3-2 at Siena and Torino drew 1-1 against Catania while, on Saturday, Palermo beat Napoli 2-1 in Sicily and, in Turin, Sampdoria defeated Empoli 3-0.

Scottish Premier

Striker Christian Nade scored one and created two more as Hearts romped to a 4-1 home win over Aberdeen and replaced them in sixth place yesterday.

Hearts now have 18 points from 13 games while Celtic top the standings on 28 from 12 games played.

The champions' fixture with Falkirk and Rangers' game at St Mirren were postponed at the request of Scotland manager Alex McLeish as Scotland prepare for their hugely important final Euro 2008 qualifier at home to Italy next Saturday.

Steven Fletcher's second-half goal gave Hibernian a 1-0 win at Gretna on Saturday. He rifled in a 52nd minute volley following a cutback by Lewis Stevenson on the left to keep Hibs in third place.

The win took them to 25 points from 13 games, level on points with second-placed Rangers and fourth-placed Dundee United, who beat Kilmarnock 2-0 despite having Jordan Robertson sent off. Leaders Celtic are three points clear at the top.

Nine-man Inverness Caledonian Thistle slumped to a 3-0 home defeat by Motherwell. Striker Graham Bayne and defender Ross Tokely were sent off for the home side.
