British police began drafting security plans yesterday to prepare for a politically-sensitive meeting between Pakistan and India at the cricket World Cup.

India joined Pakistan in the last six of the tournament yesterday after knocking out hosts England. They are expected to meet at Old Trafford in Manchester on June 8th.

Indian and Pakistani troops are currently facing off across the Kashmir border following armed clashes in the disputed region earlier this week.

Pakistan have accused India of shelling their territory, while New Delhi accuse Islamabad of backing Muslim militants fighting Indian rule in Kashmir.

Cricket officials have dismissed suggestions that the match might have to be abandoned, but security is sure to be tightened for the game.

Thousands of Pakistan and Indian fans have attended World Cup matches since the tournament began on May 14th. The north-western city of Manchester has large Pakistani and Indian communities.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Given the current state of relations between India and Pakistan, we will be looking very closely at increased security for any match between the two sides."

He said police would consult with security chiefs, the Home Office and Foreign Office for information on any potential flash points.

Manchester United football star Dwight Yorke made a surprise cricket World Cup appearance at Old Trafford. His winning habit failed to rub off on good friend Brian Lara as the West Indies lost to Australia.

Yorke, who played for the English champions as they won their third trophy of the season against Bayern Munich in the European Cup final on Wednesday, came onto the field with the drinks trolley during Australia's innings.

He joked with childhood friend and fellow Trinidadian Lara and the rest of the team. Manchester United's stadium is just down the road from the Old Trafford cricket ground.
