Penalty proves costly for Sligo

Roscommon 1-11 Sligo 1-8:Sligo manager Kevin Walsh described referee Derek Fahy’s decision to award a penalty in first-half injury-time as “shocking” as his side slumped to a three-point defeat in Dr Hyde Park.

Sligo goalkeeper Philip Greene was penalised for barging into Roscommon full-forward Cathal Shine as he made his way out of the small square, having gathered an effort from Michael Finneran. Donal Smith converted the spot kick emphatically

Sligo were 1-4 to 0-4 ahead after 23 minutes, helped by Adrian Marren’s seventh minute goal. But four points in succession from Smith, Niall Daly and Cathal Cregg nudged Roscommon in front before Smith’s penalty.

Johnny Martyn and Mark Breheny tagged on some eye-catching scores for Sligo but, despite not scoring for the last 15 minutes, the Roscommon held on.
