THEY HAVE struggled in the league so far this season, Saturday’s draw with UCD leaving them second from bottom of the table, but Pembroke Wanderers upset the odds yesterday with a 4-2 defeat of Hermes in the semi-finals of the Leinster Senior Cup.
The victory clinched Pembroke their first appearance in the final since 2004, but their opponents on St Patrick’s Day, Old Alexandra,have waited since 2000.
Two goals from Karen Hales and one each from Sarah Clarke and Rachel McKeown sealed Pembroke’s victory against a Hermes side seeking their fourth Leinster Senior Cup in a row, while a goal in each half from Roz Ellis and Nicola Gray gave Alexandra a 2-0 win over Corinthian.
Hermes will have to dust themselves down in time for tomorrow evening’s crucial league game against Loreto. A win for Hermes would lift them a point above Railway Union in the table, although with a game more played, while victory for Loreto would put them level with the leaders on points and games played.
The top three all had comfortable wins on Saturday, Railway beating Corinthian 4-0, Hermes 3-0 winners over Glenanne and Loreto beating bottom club Bray by the same scoreline.
In Munster, Cork Harlequins revived their title hopes with a 3-2 win over fellow contenders Catholic Institute, Karen Bateman scoring two of their goals.
