Steve Pate fired his second straight four-under-par 67 to hold on for a one-shot win at the CVS Charity Classic in Sutton, Massachusetts yesterday - his first PGA Tour victory in six years.

Pate finished with a 15-underpar total of 269 to claim the $270,000 first prize. The 37-yearold Californian, whose career has been slowed by injuries, won for the first time since the 1992 Buick Invitational.

In one swoop Pate won more than he won all of last year and increased his 1998 earnings to $658,250.

Scott Hoch's six-under 65 put him in a tie for second place with Australian Brad Hughes, while Willie Wood went round in 70 and finished in a three-way tie for fourth with Nolan Henke and Mike Heinen.
