Owen hoping for late return

Michael Owen has not ruled out playing this season. The Newcastle United and England striker ruptured knee ligaments against Sweden at the World Cup and has not played since.

But he is looking forward to his comeback match, and said yesterday: "I have targets. I have a specific game which is probably miles off. It gives me something to focus on, and to look forward to."

He has been told he faces a further six to nine months out of action.

"If it's six months I'll be back in April, if it's seven months (I'll be back at the) start of May, and eight or nine months (means) I'll miss the season," said Owen. "I won't come back before it's ready. It'd be foolish to do that. I'm sure I'll come back fit and strong when I do come back."

The 26-year-old's right knee was operated on in Colorado by Dr Richard Steadman, who expects Owen to make a full recovery. "He's really pleased," said the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker. "It's in great condition. Early signs are that it's feeling great. I've stepped off crutches for the first time today, which was another little bonus for me."

Liverpool last night handed the Moroccan junior international Nabil El Zahr a competitive debut for their reserves after receiving provisional Fifa clearance to select the midfielder despite a continuing dispute with his former club, St Etienne.

The 20-year-old had rejected the chance to remain with the French club and signed a four-year contract at Anfield. However, St Etienne argued that they had offered him professional terms and, under French rules, were therefore due a development fee.

"St Etienne offered me a professional deal but I waited before signing it because I was unconvinced it was in my best interests to stay," said El Zahr, who had disappointed the club by opting to represent Morocco rather than France.

"When we came back for pre-season training this summer I reported to the seniors, but they weren't really expecting me. So I preferred to pack my suitcases and go somewhere where I'd have a long-term future, that's to say Liverpool."

Compromise is expected over a financial settlement, but Liverpool were bolstered by Fifa's backing and El Zahr is now registered with the FA.
