Out of touch

Golfers may occasionally blame their equipment, motor racing drivers often give out about their cars but it is unusual for a rugby player to complain about the ball. During Saturday's Six Nations Championship game between Ireland and Italy at Stadio Flaminio, it was noticeable how many times players struggled to make touch and the distance kicks travelled was considerably shorter despite the absence of wind.

Most international teams play with a Gilbert ball; it is certainly the favoured option of the Irish side. But the Italians chose the Mitre ball, at least they did until last Saturday. Judging by the number of times that Azzurri kicks to touch failed to reach their destination, it may not be the case for much longer.
