O'Mahony to continue

John O'Mahony has committed himself to the job as Galway football manager for a further three years

John O'Mahony has committed himself to the job as Galway football manager for a further three years. Selectors Stephen Joyce and Pete Warren are also staying in position for what has been the same Galway management for the past five years. By Ian O'Riordan

During that time O'Mahony led Galway to two All-Ireland titles - 1998 and 2001 - but there was speculation after last year's success, and again after last month's All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Kerry, that he would step down. Yesterday he outlined his reasons for staying on.

"We have had a successful period for the last few years and it is difficult to walk away from that," he said. "But I got great support and encouragement from everyone else involved. I think the future does look bright for Galway football especially with the success we've had this year by winning Connacht titles at senior, under-21 and minor level.

"I hope as well that my decision to stay on will motivate some of the older players to stay on. I suppose it is a long time but I'm certainly looking forward to the next few years. Of course a position will be reviewed on a yearly basis but I'm committed for the next three years and I think there is still more success to be achieved."

O'Mahony will also keep charge of Galway's under-21 side, which this afternoon play Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final.
