Leeds manager David O'Leary has been handed a UEFA Cup blow with the news that captain Rio Ferdinand is out of tonight's second-round return against Troyes.
Ferdinand yesterday remained behind to receive treatment for a hamstring strain while the rest of the squad flew to France.
With Leeds defending a two-goal lead following their 4-2 victory at Elland Road two weeks ago, Ferdinand's presence would have been vital, particularly given the flair of striker Patrice Loko, who scored both of Troyes' goals.
Ferdinand is hopeful of a return this Sunday when Leeds face Spurs at Elland Road, which will come as a major relief to England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.
With Jonathan Woodgate currently involved in a retrial with team-mate Lee Bowyer at Hull Crown Court, and Lucas Radebe still sidelined with a knee injury, there are two options open to O'Leary.
The 43-year-old Irishman could move Danny Mills inside from right back and bring in Gary Kelly to the starting line-up or, as is more likely, Michael Duberry will replace Ferdinand.
With Eirik Bakke also struggling with a knee injury, and given Bowyer's absence, O'Leary looks set for a reshuffle in midfield as well as in defence.
