FRANKIE DETTORI failed to make a winning return to action at Newmarket last night but left no doubt that his infectious brand of enthusiasm for race riding remains undiminished.

Two months of frustrating inaction since smashing his left elbow when falling at Newbury on June 13th came to an end when the champion stepped aboard Conon Folds in the Carwin Maiden Stakes.

John Gosden's colt was unable to make it a fairytale return for his jockey, trailing in eighth, but Dettori came back with a smile as wide as Newmarket Heath. "It's great to be back and I feel really good - there were no problems at all," he grinned.
