THIS first round Leinster club SHC tie at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow, produced a couple of remarkable statistics as visitors Glenealy failed to score from play after the opening minute and could not raise a second half flag with the storm force wind behind them.
Naomh Brid, the Carlow champions, were inspired by an outstanding display from centreback and team captain, Johnny Nevin. The dual Carlow County player was the game's outstanding figure.
Glenealy, coached by former Kilkenny All Ireland senior medallist, John Henderson, had a dream start when centre forward Tom Byrne kicked the ball to the Naomh Brid net within 30 seconds of the start. Remarkably, Jonathan O'Neill's pointed free in the 27th minute was their only other score.
. In yesterday's other Leinster club SH game, Meath champions Trim edged out Wolfe Tones of Louth 2-7 to 2-6.
