My Club: Cruit Island Club

Daniel O'Donnell is one of the country's best loved singers. A recent golf convert, he joined Cruit Island a couple of years ago and now plays as often as he can, especially after returning from one of his many tours around the world.

The nine-hole course is situated a couple of miles from Dungloe on the Donegal coast and had its first competition in 1986, building the clubhouse five years later. It is also planning to expand to the full 18 holes in the near future.

Membership: There's just 300 at the moment across all categories but we're all very close and that includes many of my good friends like Carmel Bonner and Donal Gallagher and my old school friend PJ Sweeney. You can also run into more familiar faces like Gay Byrne and Packie Bonner.

Status: The club has a full calendar of competitions but overall it's the friendly and relaxed atmosphere of playing the course that's most important. As for scenery it's one of the best courses I've been on and the fact that it's on my doorstep is fabulous.

Honours: I have played in a few competitions although won nothing yet. Still, I've had a few good rounds all the same and that's always a great thrill. There is also the chance to travel with the club and a group of about 20 of us have just returned from Troon in Scotland.

Finest Hour: I'm still waiting for that to happen as well but I am getting a little better even if my handicap seems to be going up. Best of all is that anytime you go down to the club you can find somebody to play a round with because we all know everybody else.

Club Hero: I think Tony Boyle does an amazing job looking after the course as do all the groundsmen and Mary and Philomena Boyle also bring terrific fun and atmosphere to the clubhouse.

Greatest Rivals: There are so many wonderful courses in Donegal and the other local course in Portnoo is very popular as well but I think that when we get the full 18 holes we will rival the best of them.
