ANDREW MOLLARD steered J Beam to a convincing win in the ninth outing of the Carlsberg Royal Alfred Superleague at Howth Yacht Club on Saturday to secure second overall in class one after two discards.

Tight racing on the One design Shipman course saw Dun Laoghaire husband and wife pairing Malachy and Eithne Muldoon, sailing Malindi from the National Yacht club, get the upper hand in the six boat fleet and they now lead overall after eight races and three discards with five nett points.

Overall, the RAYC fleet was reduced to 20 boats and there were no starters in class zero with most of the large yachts still en route from last week's Cork Week regatta.

Racing in 15 knots and bright sunshine, J Beam led a reduced fleet of five class one yachts on a course from Howth into Dublin Bay.

In class two over a similar course, Neill Love and Des Collins on Midnight Express strengthened their overall position with another win in their Albin express design and now lead Edmund Kay's Trudi, an Impala, by seven points overall.

Another Impala, Finbar Tighe's La Camarguaise of Howth finished third.
