McEvoy wraps it up nicely

LEINSTER SCHOOLS' JUNIOR CUP:CUS 10 Gonzaga College 3

WINGER ANDREW McEvoy grabbed all 10 points as Leeson Street school CUS overcame a strong Gonzaga challenge at Templeville Road yesterday.

The CUS speedster intercepted a pass and cantered over from 50 metres to open the scoring mid-way through the first half, before adding the conversion.

His second-half penalty crucially moved the city-centre side two scores clear, and though Gonzaga huffed and puffed, a well-struck penalty from Conor McKeon was all they could muster.

In truth it was a scrappy game dominated by set-pieces, but CUS made better use of the ball in hand and a slicker service at half-back allowed centres Andrew Neary and especially Ruadhan Magee to give their side go-forward ball and work the defence repeatedly.

It still took a slice of luck for CUS to take the lead when Ronan Carroll’s pass was plucked from the air by McEvoy before he raced away to dot down between the sticks and CUS stayed on top.
