Limerick will line out without such stalwarts as Gary Kirby, Declan Nash and T J Ryan when they take on Waterford in the Munster hurling championship at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday. Overall the team is much as expected.

The full back line of Stephen McDonagh, Brian Begley and Brian Geary has been well tested while the midfield partnership of Ciaran Carey and Jack Foley has experience and speed.

Mike Houlihan will lead the attack while another veteran, Mike Galligan, has been chosen at left corner forward. Nash, Kirby and Ryan are included among the substitutes.

Begley, Geary and left half back Clement Smith are making their championship debuts while there are two sets of brothers in the team - Ollie and James Moran and Mark and Jack Foley.

Dublin hurlers have included two members of their football side in the team to face Wexford in the first round of the Leinster hurling championship in Nowlan Park on Sunday.

Liam Walsh, who plays his football with Thomas Davis and hurling with Faughs, will figure at right half back and Shane Ryan, from Naomh Mearnog will play at left half forward.

Wexford are expected to delay their selection until later in the week. Among those who are doubtful are Eugene Furlong, Rod Guiney, Dave Guiney, Ryan Quigley and Gary Laffan.

In football, Westmeath, who were involved in the controversial victory over Carlow in the first preliminary round of the Leinster championship, have made five changes in their side to play Longford in Mullingar on Sunday. The selectors have picked the side which many expected to line out in the Carlow match. On that occasion four of the under-21 team scheduled to meet Kerry in the All-Ireland final the following week were withdrawn, but all four are back in the team.

Also back in action is the regular goalkeeper Dermot Ryan. He has recovered from injury and replaces Aidan Lennon, who deputised for him in the Carlow match.

The under-21 players who return to action are left corner back Fergal Murray the centre back Aidan Canning, midfielder David O'Shaughnessy and left corner forward Des Dolan.

Out of the reckoning go David Murphy, John Cooney, Kenny Lyons (who is suspended after his dismissal in the Carlow match) and David Mitchell.

Roscommon have called up Rossa Callaghan and Stephen Lohan for their clash in the Connacht football championship against Leitrim in Carrick-on-Shannon. Out of the side go Michael Ryan and Gerry Keane from the side which figured in much of the National League campaign.

Roscommon are still without Tommy Grehan because of a serious leg injury but the full forward line of Francie Dolan, Francis Grehan and Lorcan Dowd remains intact and will be expected to give Roscommon the edge.

Mayo have left Liam McHale, Ken Mortimer and Pat Fallon on the bench for their meeting with New York in the Connacht football championship in Castlebar on Saturday evening. Gordon Morley makes his championship debut at left corner back while James Nallen is given an outing at midfield in partnership with David Brady.

Monaghan team manager Eamonn McEneaney last night called up two players to make their senior championship debuts when he named his side to meet Fermanagh in Clones on Sunday. Under-21 captain Padraig McKenna lines out at right corner back while the other newcomer Iain Larmer plays at top of the left.

The return of Frank McEnaney after injury is welcome news for Monaghan and he will be partnered in midfield by Joe Coyle while the experienced Gerard McGuirk is preferred at centre back.

In contrast, Fermanagh have severe injury problems for this game. Definitely our are regulars such as Rory Gallagher, Colin Curran, Paul Courtney, Justin Gilheaney, Ray Curran and Ciaran McManus.

GAA president Joe McDonagh yesterday presented a cheque for £750,000 to the trustees of the fund which was launched to support the victims and families of those who died or suffered in the Omagh bombing.
