Limerick call on Lenihan

The Limerick County Board have installed Liam Lenihan as a third selector alongside Joe McKenna and Declan Nash

The Limerick County Board have installed Liam Lenihan as a third selector alongside Joe McKenna and Declan Nash. Between them they will appoint a manager to replace Pad Joe Whelahan, but not until the end of this year's championship.

Lenihan previously served as a selector in the Tom Ryan era and is the current county board vice-chairman.

However, to think all is well in the county would be incorrect as a proposed vote of no confidence in Nash and McKenna, who were Whelahan's selectors, was only defeated 62-58 at last night's typically heated board meeting.

David Mahedy will remain on as trainer, while a hurling coach will be appointed shortly.

Dublin's hurling problems plunged into deeper crisis yesterday as Phil Brennan followed Ronan Fallon's lead in opting out of the county panel.

Fallon, who is seen as one of the county's rising stars, played in last Saturday's challenge match against O'Tooles but after another training session he subsequently decided to leave Humphrey Kelleher's panel.

Fallon also played with the Dublin footballers this year but it's unclear if he will follow the lead of Conal Keaney, David O'Callaghan and Shane Ryan by prioritising football.

Injury has also hindered the availability of captain David Curtin, Darragh Spain, Cormac O'Brien, Stephen McDonnell, Alan McCrabbe, Dave Donnelly, Aodhan de Paor, Simon Daly, Derek O'Reilly and Shane Martin in what can be described as a disastrous run of luck.

Nevertheless, considering Galway and Clare have already handed out heavy defeats in this year's league, this latest defection puts Kelleher's position in doubt.

Meanwhile, Dublin football manager Paul Caffrey has made two changes for Saturday night's visit of Westmeath to Parnell Park.

Colin Moran makes a long-awaited return from injury at wing forward where he replaces Senan Connell, while Mark Vaughan's two points against Kerry sees him displace David O'Callaghan at corner forward. Both players came off the bench against Kerry last Saturday.

Armagh are without injured duo Malachy Mackin and Ciarán McKinney ahead of their local derby against Down at Crossmaglen on Sunday after both were carried off the pitch injured against Laois last weekend.

Tipperary make three changes in their team to play Wexford in the National Hurling League in Thurles on Sunday from the side which defeated Limerick.

Martin Maher replaces Hugh Moloney in defence. In attack Benny Dunne and Paddy O'Brien are named instead of Donal Shelly and Séamus Butler.
