Light option for Jennings

Rowing FISA Team CupSinéad Jennings confirmed yesterday her flirtation with competition as a heavyweight single sculler is most likely over and she will enter the Irish trials process in an effort to be part of a lightweight women's double scull for the Olympic Qualifiers in Lucerne in June.

The Donegal woman, who was world champion as a lightweight single sculler in 2001, had been training with Thor Nilsen in Spain in an effort to step up to the heavyweight grade, but yesterday she said: "I still haven't had a conversation with Thor, but it's probable I'll compete in the trials as a lightweight."

Jennings was speaking after being part of a good team performance in the FISA Team Cup in Seville over the weekend. Jennings and Heather Boyle came in fifth, one place ahead of Niamh Ní Chéilleachair and Fiola Foley, in the lightweight women's double on Saturday.

Foley and Ní Chéilleachair took fourth in the same grade yesterday.

The heavyweight men's double of Seán Casey and Seán Jacob failed to make the final on either day, but lightweights Sam Lynch and Gearóid Towey competed in this grade and finished a creditable fourth on Saturday, over 1,000 metres, and fifth on Sunday (500 metres).

The Ireland lightweight four which made last year's World Championship final had an impressive win on Saturday but were placed second to Russia yesterday - but an Ireland lightweight eight gave Olympic heavyweight champions Britain a race on Saturday and finished second to them on both days.

Back in Ireland, Commercial had an outstanding day at the Lagan Scullers head of the river in Belfast on Saturday. There was a record entry of 130 boats.

Even in the absence of their two top scullers, Albert Maher and Jacob, the Dublin club had the best single sculler in Ciarán Lewis, who was first man home by a massive margin of 21 seconds.

The men's junior coxless quadruple scull provided another highlight for the men in green, white and blue - they set a course record in their win in the third head of the day.

Queen's University were the fastest quadruple scull of the day.
