Lester Piggott to ride in Broderick race

The inimitable Lester Piggott rides again today when he revisits the scene of so many memorable past successes at the Curragh. The nine times Epsom Derby winning jockey may now be 60 but he will be legged up on to Fill The Bill just before six o clock this evening to participate in the Shane Broderick Appeal Fund Private Charity Sweepstakes.

Except it won't be so private out on the track with 29 other Corinthians taking part in an effort to raise money for the young Tipperary National Hunt jockey left paralysed after a fall at Fairyhouse last Easter.

The level of interest has been such that the race, originally scheduled to be run over 10 furlongs, has now been put back to a mile in order to facilitate the 30 runners and riders.

That means Piggott will be riding again over the course on which he rode three 2,000 Guineas winners (1970, 1978 and 1992) and on which he twice won the 1,000 Guineas (1971 and 1979.)

This time, however, he will find himself competing against his daughter Tracy, the RTE presenter, who will also ride an Aidan O'Brien-trained horse, Ministerial Model.

Another RTE connection in the race will be Robert Hall who will ride the Ted Walsh-trained Adaramann while the Racing Channel's Declan Murphy is travelling to ride Luisa Di Camerata.

The best known horse on view will be Broderick's old partner Doran's Pride who will be ridden by his trainer Michael Hourigan.
