New Zealand knocked over the West Indies by an innings and 105 runs with a day to spare in Wellington yesterday. Chris Cairns claimed the last wicket of Franklyn Rose 45 minutes before stumps on day four to complete one of their most comprehensive Test victories.

The win gave New Zealand the series 2-0 after their nine-wicket victory in Hamilton.

The West Indies started the day with all wickets intact, following on 339 runs behind New Zealand's first innings of 518 for nine declared, and were dismissed for 234.

Adrian Griffith blundered on 45, when he was run out attempting a second run. Shivnarine Chanderpaul then brought up his 18th Test half-century in 149 minutes off 121 balls. But he edged a catch off Dion Nash to Adam Parore on 70 with the total on 148.

Nash struck again just before tea when Jimmy Adams nicked a short, fast delivery to Parore. Ridley Jacobs was snapped up by Gary Stead at short leg off Daniel Vettori for 20 to make it 189 for five, and when Nehemiah Perry went lbw for nought to Nathan Astle, there were just three wickets left. Brian Lara notched his second 50 of the match and had hit 10 fours to move to 75 when umpire Evan Watkin adjudged him caught behind when he appeared to miss the ball.

Courtney Walsh was then out for a 35th Test duck before Cairns had Rose lbw for 10.
