English Premiership side Blackburn Rovers beat off the challenge of a host of top clubs yesterday, to sign young Scottish stars Burton O'Brien (17) and David McNamee (18) from Scottish First Division outfit St Mirren. The deal could cost them up to £2.6-million.

The initial transfer fee for each player, who signed six-year contracts, is £300,000, though the overall total could rise by a further £1 million based on appearances. Both players are staying on loan at the Scottish club for the rest of the season.

"We have watched both kids for some time and are fully aware of their reputations and the interest from other Premier League clubs," Blackburn coach Brian Kidd said.

Stewart Gilmour, the St Mirren chairman, said that the sale of the two teenagers might be unpopular but it was justified as it safeguarded the club's financial future.
